Tammy of Jim + Henry

This week, we’re talking to one of our UK-based artisans, Tammy, whose newfound freedom after leaving an abusive relationship led her on a journey to become her own unique idea of perfection. Her journey included embracing her natural hair and subsequently creating the products we now know as Jim + Henry.

BLK+GRN: Why do you do what you do?

TAMMY: Hey! I make products for curly and Afro hair types because I realised there are so many women who want something which celebrates their natural hair without leaving it smelling like sickly sweet perfume, or which irritates the scalp.

Our products celebrate natural hair by encouraging women to realise they are #MoreThanEnough when they are truly and unapologetically, themselves.

BLKGRN: What was your “Aha  Moment” and when did your vision start to manifest?

TAMMY: I had a rather abusive boyfriend a few years ago, who constantly told me to ‘keep your hair straight’, amongst other things – he hated me trying to become a journalist and would always discourage me from doing interviews/talking to people. Unsurprisingly, we broke up. I remember feeling very free and realising, I don’t need to be anyone else’s idea of perfect, I am more than enough when I’m just myself, and that’s when I started to really embrace my natural hair. I started using different hair conditioners and found them to be a bit thin, they didn’t hydrate my hair. So I did it myself.

BLK+GRNHow is your brand green? Why was this important to you?

TAMMY: We use glass jars to contain our glorious product. As the UK is attempting to embrace a greener approach to packaging, we already fit into the zero waste market: we encourage all consumers to reuse our jars and we have a return and refill policy.

BLK+GRN: Why do you think it is important to Buy Black?

TAMMY: Because we exist and we must be celebrating that fact.
